Character Name: Jing Yuan
Canon: Honkai: Star Rail
Canon History: Here!
Canon Personality:
→ ( intelligent & indolent. ) One of the widely known things about Jing Yuan is his intelligence. He is known for always have some sort of 4D chess play for any battle or strategical situation ready for whenever the situation calls for it, as though he possessed some sort of divine knowledge to predict what will happen. This is given him the nickname of "Divine Foresight" amongst the people of the Xianzhou despite the fact the man himself does not possess the power of precognition himself. His ability to predict situations comes down to a combination of experience, meticulous information gathering, and his own high intelligence.
Although you would not be amiss if you were to look at Jing Yuan and think the talk of his intelligence and meticulous was nothing but just that talk. Another name one would hear amongst the Luofu is that of the "Dozing General" due to the air of laziness he often presents to those around him. It is convincing enough that it often causes his opponents to underestimate him and find him rather unimpressive─ in fact it is so convincing that even those from the other Xianzhou ships believe him to be an inactive general who takes no action, who is afraid of combat; although that could not be any further from the truth. Despite how lazy Jing Yuan appears to be he is in fact always quite busy.
Were it not for his leadership the Luofu would not have maintained unusually long tenure of peace. Jing Yuan believes in preventing disasters before they have a chance to even happen, making sure to always be informed of the currently events in order to properly plan. One must always remain prepared for any potential threats and issues that may arise.
→ ( friendly & caring. ) Jing Yuan is a outgoing and charismatic person. Were you to ask any amongst the Luofu you would quickly learn how loved and admired he is. Despite all this Jing Yuan does not have many friends himself, his duties Arbiter-General often makes him far too busy to allow for leisure time nor does his status as the Arbiter-General allow for him to easily get close to others. Many of his past friendships have crumbled apart and left him with a guilt that slowly eats away at him. If the mantle of leadership did not sit so heavily on his shoulders, if he was free to peruse friendships with same ease as he once did in his youth things would be easier. However even if he was free to do so Jing Yuan has erected walls around himself a long time ago in order to protect himself from centuries old pain.
When Jing Yuan cares about someone or something, he cares deeply─ it is an undeniable love that can be to his own determent. He is the one who was left behind of the High-Cloud Quintet and what he has left of them is incredibly precious to him. This is seen in some of the objects he keeps; the forgemaster Yingxing (Blade) created his guando, Starfall Reverie, and he still uses it to this day. Making sure to take exceptional care of the weapon. His office, the Seat of Divine Foresight, is also decorated with other weapons that his friend made throughout his lifetime. It can be seen in how he interacts with the vidyadhara's current High Elder; Bailu─ often making up alignments in order to visit her and make sure she is doing well, ignoring his own fake illness, before slinking away once he sufficiently satisfied.
One of the biggest examples is his feelings towards Dan Heng, the reincarnation of his friend Dan Feng. Dan Heng did not have a great start to his life, hatching in a prison and being forced to serve out the sentence of his predecessor─ a fact that weighed heavily on his shoulders. He was all Jing Yuan have left of his old friend and thus did all in his power in order to grant Dan Heng a life of his own, even it was to be in exile. When Dan Heng returned he was overjoyed to see his friend, mistakenly calling him Dan Feng and being corrected. As much as he misses his old friend he understands that Dan Heng is not him, he is his own person and deserves to be viewed as such. Even so that nostalgia drives him to often ask how Dan Heng is doing.
"When the Vidyadhara are reborn, they are as fish that have returned to the ocean... it is a state of complete freedom. That I may glance upon him from the shore is enough for me."
→ ( self sacrificing. ) The position that he holds isn't by any means one that Jing Yuan wanted for himself, something that he has openly spoken about before. When he was younger he wanted to become a Galaxy Ranger and have adventures across the universe, but his future was not destined for such things. He often laments his lack of time and how dull his life has become, regardless he always defers to the things that he needs to do rather than his own wants. His job is an important one, after all, and Jing Yuan is always aware of the lives that count on him and the decisions he makes. He denies his own desires constantly and it goes so far as to diminish his own feelings, often pretending he isn't as close to the people he immensely cares for.
→ ( quick-witted & mischievous. ) During his youth Jing Yuan often would bother Yingxing purely for the joy of their bickering, a memory he still looks fondly upon to this day. While he is not nearly mischievous as he once was, Jing Yuan is known to purposely antagonize his opponents, be them serious military opponents or someone he is playing chess with. He is something on a instigator, a man who enjoys breaking the enemy's strategi and watching them argue and scramble with confusion. It is not isolated to his enemies, however, as he has a habit of just not showing up to work things his colleagues expect him to.
It is also important to note that this has extended to random people online as well, though is is unclear whether or not people are aware that it is the Arbiter-General of the Luofu they are talking with:
RealName_Online: Is this more believable than me being the Emperor of Primeval Imperium?
MostHandsome@AurumAlley: Believe you me, my information is pretty authoritative. Not to brag, my classmate's fourth uncle's godmother's ex-husband worked at none other than the Seat of Divine Foresight.
RealName_Online: Hi, I'm the Emperor of Primeval Imperium, gimme money.
→ ( intemperance. ) Although not widely known, Jing Yuan is a man who can sometimes be afflicted by a lack of impulse control when given the opportunity. The biggest example of this is when he was tricked into believing that the grimalkin he was purchasing was just a normal cat─ until the cat kept growing and suddenly he had himself a large white lion living in his home. He did not dare question this at first, because the creature was just that cute. Sometimes you are incredibly smart but can be utterly undone by your impulses at any given moment, often taking action first and explaining it all away later.
AU Name: n/a
AU Age: 30
AU Birthday: August 7th
AU History:
Born to a family of successful academics and teachers, Jing Yuan's life was planned out for him long before he was first came into the world. While his youth was a joyous one it was littered with the pressure of a family who had already decided where he would go in life. He had no desire to do as they wished, in truth, his interests aligning more with martial arts and the history surrounding their family. More often than not, Jing Yuan would abandon his studies in favour of spending time with his grandfather who welcomed the boy with open arms. Much of his youth was spent in the company of his grandfather playing xiangqi and recounting stories.
Unfortunately time is a cruel mistress and would not allow for those happy days to last forever, not long after his 18th birthday Jing Yuan's grandfather fell ill. At first it appeared as though the illness was not serious, that he would bounce back as he has done so before. However the day Jing Yuan was called to his bedside he learned the truth; his grandfather was dying and there was nothing they could do to stop it. While his parents were devastated, Jing Yuan took the news calmly offering the man a smile as he begged for his grandson to listen to one final story. He told Jing Yuan a story of their family and the being only a few knew was intertwined. A long time ago a man brokered a deal with a being known as the Lightning Lord in order to save his own life. In return for that life, however, he was contracted to hunt down and kill a being of malice once a week and absorb its energies.
With his story concluded he asked one more thing of his grandson; take the Lightning Lord into himself, and allow it to possess him as it has done so many in their family throughout the years. Were he to die before it then the Lightning Lord would cease to be, having grown dependent (like a cat who enjoys getting it's meals delivered every day) on its hosts over all those long years. Jing Yuan agreed without hesitation and, much like his grandfather before him, became possessed allowing the old man to pass from this world without any regrets.
Although, at first, Jing Yuan did not feel any different. He could not tell whether or not his grandfather told him the truth, that he truly was possessed by some sort of spirit as many men in their family have been over the years, or if he simply indulged the delusions of a dying man. For the next week Jing Yuan continued as he had done so before; studying, working, spending time with his parents. It wasn't until the week after his grandfather's passing that something happened, a pain in his chest that grew and grew and grew until it all but incapacitated him. It was then that Jing Yuan heard a voice, a thunderous boom, that spoke only a few words; "Hunt, or we both perish." Left with little other choice Jing Yuan did just that, happening across rogue spirit feeding off an unconscious woman. The hunt was not an easy one, it lasted late into the night and nearly became the end of him due to his lack of combat experience. But he was successful in the end, taking down the spirit and absorbing it's energies into himself, easing the pain in his chest.
Finally understanding that his grandfather's words were not some fanciful tale, Jing Yuan gave up on the studies and goals his parents wanted for him and sort out someone who could teach him in the ways of combat. The teacher he ended up with was a woman of exceptional skill, someone who seemed to understand his predicament despite never once mentioning it. For the next ten years he trained under her, learning her combat techniques while developing his own at the same time. She even helped him hunt in the early days of their relationship when his skills were still unrefined. But then one day she simply vanished, leaving behind only a note that read: "I have nothing more to teach you, Jing Yuan."
For the next two years he took on the mantle of master, establishing himself as a teacher of martial arts with the intention of passing down all he knows to those willing to learn. Or to those who bare a weight as heavy as his own. And upon hearing the supernatural happenings within the city of Kaisou, he decides that a change a scenery is in order.
AU Personality Differences: Jing Yuan is not so different to his canon counterpart, however the tragedies of the High-Cloud Quintet does not rest so heavily on his shoulders. This does free him from the longing for old friends scattered by the wind. He also does not have to worry about an entire fleet, thus is given the opportunity to enjoy his favourite hobby; mediating with his eyes closed.
It naps, his favourite thing is naps. He gets to nap more often without people nagging him all the time.
